Employee Recognition Awards

The Awards Program recognizes staff through an annual recognition awards program. Portage College employees can be nominated for their good work, service, innovation and contributions. Recipients, both individuals and teams, will be recognized on a monthly basis.

All awards of cash and near cash will be subject to taxable benefit.

Awards include: Friends of Portage, Visionary Award, Service Excellence Award, Instructional Excellence Award, Inspiration Award (Peer Award Tribute), Extra Mile Award, Portage Leadership Medallion.

  1. Award nominations must be within the Award criteria listed on the Recognition Nomination Form - Individual or Group (Appendix A).
  2. Team nominations must include all names of the team.
  3. A maximum number of 10 employee names will be accepted for a team nomination.
  4. Human Resources will ensure that the individual/team being nominated is aware of this nomination and that their name(s) will be published.
  5. Employees receiving more than two non cash gifts a year will be subject to taxable benefit in accordance with CRA.

Years of Service Award 

Years of Service will be calculated to the end of December each year, and include any service that would be accumulated by the end of December of that year. When breaks in service occur, calculations begin when the employee returns. Click here for the College's Policies, Guidelines and Procedures on Years of Service Award. 

 Service is recognized in the following ways:

  1. For 5 years - $250.00 gift or cash in lieu
  2. For 10 years - $500 gift or cash in lieu
  3. For 15 years -$750 cash
  4. For 20 years - $1000 cash
  5. For 25 years - $1250 cash. AUPE members may choose 3 days vacation in lieu of the $500.00 gift which cannot be carried forward beyond the fiscal year.
  6. For 30 years - $1250 cash. AUPE members may choose 3 days vacation in lieu of the $500.00 gift which cannot be carried forward beyond the fiscal year.

A certificate of service will also be presented along with the gift or cash as indicated above.
