Community Social Work Transferability

February 8, 2017

Portage College has been working diligently with other universities and colleges to provide our students access to further studies. That hard work has paid off.

Our Community Social Work students will now receive Advanced Standing for entrance into Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Programs at two Alberta institutions. The University of Calgary transfer agreement was renewed June 2016 and in the fall the pathway to Grant MacEwan University's BSW program was opened up.

Students are encouraged to begin their studies with the accredited programming at Portage College campuses in Cold Lake and Lac La Biche before they transfer on in their studies to larger institutions. Both campuses have the first year of the Community Social Work program commencing again in the fall of 2017.

"This is a great opportunity for our students to obtain their diploma at Portage College and then continue into a degree", says Lyla Allan, Community Social Work Coordinator at Portage College. Robin Tizzard, Associate Dean adds, "Students are interested in education pathways that start with Portage College, and our Social Work diploma is a great example.  Students complete many university transfer courses at the college within their two year diploma, and these courses transfer throughout Alberta."

"Portage College has quality, competency, and portability of credits which is only part of the reason why students come here," says Dr. Trent Keough, President & CEO of Portage College, "They receive a strong academic foundation and are better prepared to face University and this is why the College's goal is to make our programs transferable throughout Alberta."
