Social workers have a passion to help others; many say it is a calling.

Each year, a week is set aside to celebrate and honour the profession of Social Work. This year it is March 1st to 7th.

At Portage College, the Community Social Work (CSW) program provides students with practical training and experience to assist individuals, families, and various groups.

Part of the CSW curriculum is a course on Community Development, where second year students create events to raise awareness and funds for local charities and organizations. This year there are four enthusiastic student groups.

So far, students have organized a food drive to help fill the shelves at the Bonnyville food bank; another group will help the homeless in Lac La Biche with a Spinathon; Out of the Elements Men’s Shelter will benefit from a fundraising lunch; and the final group is helping residents in Continuing Care at the William J. Cadzow Healthcare Centre with numerous bake sales held at the college and Healthcare Centre.

Students enrol in Community Social Work because they want to help people. “Even if I could reach out to just one person or help one person in a big way, that would be enough for me.” Second year student Kathy Bender has seen the need for herself. ”In our rural areas in our hospitals, our schools, even in our communities, it does not seem like there are enough social workers.”

This year’s theme for Social Work Week is “United by Diversity, strengthened by inclusion”.
