Portage College and the City of Cold Lake Announce Educational Partnership

Portage College and the City of Cold Lake announce their continued partnership focused on enriching educational opportunities for municipal employees and elected representatives. By signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), both entities commit to fostering continuous learning and skills advancement within the community.

With a solid commitment to accessible education, Portage College will offer micro-credential training programs to City staff and officials under the terms of the agreement. From March 1, 2024, and running until February 28, 2027, participants will be eligible to enroll in one complimentary course annually. The curriculum covers a various of disciplines, ranging from permaculture to business essentials, providing diverse pathways for professional development.

Reflecting on the partnership, President Nancy Broadbent expressed Portage College's excitement, stating, "Since 1999, Portage has been a part of Cold Lake, and we will continue to serve the community for years to come. Collaborating on this initiative is a significant step toward our shared goal of lifelong learning and community prosperity. This partnership holds immense promise for individuals and the broader region."

In the spirit of mutual progress, the MOU includes regular evaluations to optimize outcomes for both partners. President Nancy Broadbent and Mayor Craig Copeland reaffirmed their commitment to exploring additional avenues of collaboration, such as supporting work-integrated learning opportunities for college students and developing promotional, economic development, and training initiatives tailored to Cold Lake's needs.

City of Cold Lake Mayor Craig Copeland expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Portage College is a valued community partner and a very important part of our City. We are pleased to be able to build on our strong working relationship to offer our staff and elected officials the opportunity to further their education. This is one of many collaborations with Portage that will help to strengthen the City’s administrative capacity, while ensuring our residents have access to excellent post-secondary and continuing education options."

The alliance between Portage College and the City of Cold Lake marks a significant milestone in advancing educational empowerment for residents. Together, these institutions are poised to establish a dynamic partnership that will shape the region’s educational landscape for years to come.
