Volunteer cooks dish up 200 turkey dinners to Portage students and families

March 27, 2026

On Wednesday, March 25, the Portage College Voyageur Grill was once again the setting for the annual Easter-time dinner for students and their families.

Congregation members from Lac La Biche’s Lord of Glory Lutheran Church, Portage College staff, Lac La Biche Rotary Club members, and community helpers prepared and served more than 200 helpings of turkey, stuffing, potatoes, veggies and gravy at the Easter-time event. Any leftovers were added to the Give & Take Pantry, a free access refrigerator and dry-good cupboard located in the cafeteria area that is stocked by donations and is available to students.

An organizer with a trifecta of connections to the event – Portage employee, community volunteer and church member – David Paul, said the evening provides a free meal for students during a time of the school year, “when stress levels are up and bank accounts are usually low.”

He said the event, which also included family-friendly activities provided by the Students’ Association of Portage College (SAPC), highlights the support and compassion that is found in the community.

“Thanks to the congregation and the fine people … this year’s dinner was one of our most successful ever,” said Paul.

(clockwise from top left) David Paul credits the event’s success to the volunteer support; there were a lot of sweet choices at the dessert table; Lord of Glory Pastor Leonard Mavengere was joined by volunteers from the church, the college and community; more than 200 turkey dinner servings were dished up
