The Traditions Gallery is part of the museum and houses the museum store as long as shorter length exhibitions. Past exhibitions in the Traditions Gallery have included the Carrying On Indigenous Art Exhibition which ran from November 2016 to January 2017 and the People, Places and Faces exhibition from March 2017 to June 2018.
Portage College students from the Native Arts and Culture program were successfully juried into the Carrying On exhibition at the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery. The show was also part of The Works Art and Design Festival in Edmonton which is presented by The Works International Visual Arts Society and showcases the best in contemporary new media, digital art, and design alongside traditional visual art mediums. This successful exhibition was then selected by the Canadian Crafts Federation to be one of three shows at their national conference in Calgary at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
People, Places and Faces was an exhibition of art and artifact depicting faces through various styles of Indigenous Art. From Woodland’s style, to contemporary works and masks the exhibit featured works by Steven Snake, Duke Redbird, Shirley Bear and Daphne Odjig.
Winter 2018 MOAPAA was thrilled to be showcasing the work of renowned artist and Order of Canada Recipient Jane Ash Poitras. Jane was selected to complete a large mural telling the history of Treaty 6 and Treaty 8 which will be the feature work in this exhibition.
