Kika Mukuninwa named Voyageurs Men’s and Women’s Soccer Head Coach
January 29, 2020

The Portage College Voyageurs Men's and Women's Soccer program is thrilled to announce the appointment of Kika Mukuninwa as Head Coach.

Mukuninwa brings soccer skills, experience and an unparalleled level of understanding of student athletes who must balance school, exhibition and regular season games. “I'm excited to lead the soccer programs!” he says.  Mukuninwa joined the Voyageurs Soccer program as Assistant Coach in September of 2019. That’s when the Voyageurs began their inaugural season in the Alberta Colleges Athletics Conference (ACAC).

“It's an honour and privilege to be joining the Voyageur family,” says Mukuninwa.”I hope to continue building on the foundation that has been set and doing my best to enrich the student-athlete experience. Our inaugural season was one of trials but also great progress, and we will look to match our work and effort with success on the field and in the classroom. I thank those at Portage College for putting their trust in me.”

Nate Bedford, Director of Athletics & Recreation and Head Coach of Men’s Hockey can’t think of a better person to head the soccer squads. “We’re excited to have Kika signed for the next two years to help lead our men’s and women’s soccer teams,” says Bedford. “Kika did an excellent job in a really tough situation last year. His ability to stay positive throughout the adversity is a good indicator that he is the right fit for our program. His work ethic, contacts and vision have all been extremely exciting for us knowing he’s the right person for the job with the right initiatives.”

Mukuninwa and the soccer teams demonstrated that positivity and dedication this past season. The men’s and women’s soccer teams received the 2019 Fair Play Award from the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) for demonstrating characteristics of fair play without question.

“I’m really proud of all of the players,” says Mukuninwa, who has no time to rest these days. He’s currently coaching the College’s Futsal team(s) and is already working on his rosters for the soccer season which begins in September.

“I’m really looking forward to helping this beautiful game grow at Portage College,” he says. “It’s truly special to be a Voyageur.”
