Students begin their educational journey by completing the Community Social Work Diploma at Portage College, a two-year program focused on practical, hands-on training. This program prepares students to support individuals, families, and communities across a range of social service settings. Throughout the diploma, students gain real-world experience through supervised practicum placements, completing approximately 350 hours per year in environments such as schools, shelters, addiction services, and community agencies. Graduates of the program receive a Diploma in Community Social Work and are eligible to apply for provisional registration with the Alberta College of Social Workers.
Portage College has a transfer agreement with the University of Calgary, allowing eligible graduates to continue their education and complete a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW).
This pathway enables students to:
- Build on their diploma-level knowledge
- Transition into advanced academic and professional training
- Work toward full professional social work qualifications
Students are encouraged to consult academic advisors to understand specific transfer requirements and admission criteria.
