Students celebrating Heart Month at Portage College know which vital organ is at the heart of their training.
“This Heart Month, we’re celebrating heart health, compassion, and the future healthcare professionals who make a difference in our communities,” says Portage College Practical Nurse Instructor Kaitlyn Keer.
The Practical Nurse Program, Paramedic and Emergency Medical Responder programs teach about heart health through anatomy, physiology and personal health and wellness courses.
“Quite literally, it’s at the heart of everything we do in this profession,” says Keer.
The awareness month at Portage recognizes the efforts of those already in the healthcare industry and the dedication of those preparing to enter the field.
“We’re proud to teach our students to become professionals in the healthcare industry where their decisions and their training can save lives and prolong lives,” says Keer.

While there are no specific activities planned at the College for Heart Month because many students are on clinical practicum placements, Keer hopes the promotion of the month helps to keep heart health in people’s minds. She also encourages anyone with their heart set on a health and wellness career to visit the Portage College Open House events taking place in the coming weeks.
The Lac La Biche campus Open House is March 2, with the St. Paul campus Open House the next day. The Cold Lake campus Open House takes place on March 3. The Nursing program is offered at each campus.
The Open House events will offer campus tours, insights into all the programs offered by Portage College, including health program labs and simulators, and an opportunity to meet program representatives who provide training that can literally save lives.
For those whose heart may not be in a full-time Portage College health and wellness program, but still want to learn the basics, the Portage College Continuing Education department offers two-day first aid and CPR training sessions throughout the year.
More details about the upcoming Open House events, Portage College Continuing Education classes and Health and Wellness programs can be found on the Portage College website and social pages.
