Portage College Community Social Work Students Support Cold Lake Sobeys BBQ for Child and Youth Mental Health

Cold Lake, AB – Portage College Community Social Work students recently joined Sobeys Cold Lake in hosting a community BBQ to raise funds for child and youth mental health. Proceeds from the event in Northern Alberta will go directly to the Stollery Children’s Hospital, which provides critical mental health services and support to families.

The BBQ, held on September 27, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., saw both first- and second-year Community Social Work students assisting throughout the day. Their efforts, combined with the generosity of residents and Sobeys staff, helped raise $1,569 in sales and donations.

“Events like this highlight the important role our students play in the community,” said Lyla Allan, Coordinator of Community Social Work & Addictions Counselling, Portage College. “We are proud of their commitment to supporting such a vital cause and grateful to Sobeys for leading this initiative.”
