Heather currently works as the Childcare Supervisor at Opokaa’sin Early Intervention and serves as the Chair President of the Childcare Directors Association of Southwest Alberta. Her career reflects the practical and flexible learning approach offered by Portage College.

“All of the instructors were exceptional. They were knowledgeable, supportive, and truly understanding of the diverse experiences of students,” said Heather. “I especially appreciated the Administrative course, which gave realistic insight into the financial and operational side of running an Early Learning and Child Care program.”

Returning to school after more than ten years in the field, Heather said the program recognized her professional experience and leadership. “Portage College supported my growth rather than treating me as new to the field,” she added. “The program’s flexibility allowed me to continue working full-time and raising a family while completing my diploma.”

Heather also noted the support she received beyond the classroom. Encouraged by her instructors, she applied for scholarships and graduated debt-free, earning the Spirit of Community Partnership Award and the Indigenous Careers Award.

When asked what advice she would give prospective students, Heather said simply: “Do it. One year from now, you will have completed the program and be proud you took the leap.”

Portage College is proud to celebrate alumni like Heather Cappis, whose leadership and dedication continue to strengthen early learning and childcare across Alberta.
