Portage College Receives $750K Grant to Address Critical Commercial Driver Shortages in Northeastern Alberta

December 5, 2025

Portage College has been awarded a $750,000 Industry Advancement Grant from the Alberta Ministry of Transportation and Economic Corridors to address critical driver shortages in Northeastern Alberta. The two-year initiative, running from January 2026 to January 2028, will train 64 Class 3 commercial drivers across communities including St. Paul, Cold Lake, Bonnyville, and Lac La Biche.

The program specifically targets equity and inclusion, creating opportunities for women, Indigenous peoples, newcomers, LGBTQ2S+ individuals, people with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups to enter the commercial driving profession.

“This funding allows us to tackle a critical workforce challenge while creating opportunities for people who have traditionally faced barriers to employment,” said Joanne Metchooyeah, Associate Dean Economic Development & Sustainability at Portage College. “By partnering with community organizations and launching a campaign to change perceptions of the transportation industry, we’re not just training drivers—we’re building inclusive pathways to meaningful careers and strengthening the economic future of Northeastern Alberta.”

The innovative training program will feature a Hyflex delivery model combining in-person, online synchronous, and asynchronous learning methods, ensuring maximum accessibility for rural learners. Participants will receive comprehensive safety certifications, attend pre-training workshops, and complete 40-hour internships with local employers.

The college has established strong partnerships with the Bonnyville Friendship Centre, EmployAbilities, and the Community Adult Learning Program (CALP) to provide wraparound support services for program participants, ensuring their success throughout the training and employment placement process.

This initiative directly supports Portage College’s commitment to community-driven innovation and student-focused success strategies, while addressing critical workforce needs in Northeastern Alberta. By creating accessible training opportunities and changing industry perceptions, the program aims to build long-term workforce sustainability through industry partnerships, community engagement, and retention strategies.

The first cohort of trainees is expected to begin in early 2026, with recruitment efforts beginning well in advance to ensure broad participation from diverse communities.
