Just Paths: Métis Belonging and the Law: Land, Family, and the Politics of Recognition

Métis Belonging and the Law: Land, Family, and the Politics of Recognition
Presented by Dr. Angie Tucker
What does it mean to belong to a Métis community, and how do laws and government policies shape that belonging?
Join Dr. Angie Tucker as she explores how family histories, connections to land, and community relationships shape Métis identity and belonging.
Drawing on stories shared by Métis people in southwestern Manitoba, this session looks at how government policies, migration, and legal recognition have affected Métis families and communities.
The discussion will also explore Métis rights under Section 35 of the Constitution, the Powley decision, and the role of ancestry and family records in determining Métis identity.
