President’s Adoption Ceremony

The President’s Adoption Ceremony is an Indigenous alternative to a formal induction ceremony that not only welcomes Dr. Stephen Price to Portage College but also receives him into Cree territory. The ceremony will also offer Dr. Price a Cree name to complement the Blackfoot Nation name Ai piss sapi – meaning Scout – that he was previously gifted by Elder Miiksika’am of Siksika Nation.

The recruitment process that guided Dr. Price to Portage College began with an Indigenous Pipe Ceremony, calling on the spiritual ancestors to assist with the search. The Adoption ceremony – which includes a grass dance to mark the path for Dr. Price, songs, dance and storytelling, will conclude with a Pipe Ceremony, which marks the completion of the recruitment journey, and closes the circle, allowing the spiritual ancestors to return to the Creator.

We welcome all employees and community members to attend.
