Portage College and Lac La Biche County have partnered on a “learn in your hometown” initiative for local residents and local high school graduates.
The Lac La Biche County Reduced Tuition Initiative Award offers eligible applicants with local connections some big tuition savings on a range of Portage College post-secondary programs.
The three-year agreement offers eligible residents who have lived in Lac La Biche County for two or more years, or graduates from any Lac La Biche County high school up to 50 per cent off their tuition costs – up to $2,500.
Applications for the award are now being accepted and will be granted on a “first-eligible, first-awarded basis.”
This initiative is part of the important work underway through Lac La Biche County’s Education pillar, which focuses on expanding access to education, strengthening local opportunities and supporting residents in building their futures close to home.
Lac La Biche County officials say the Reduced Tuition Initiative is a direct investment in local residents and the community. By helping reduce the financial barriers associated with post-secondary education, the County is making it easier and more accessible to pursue training, develop new skills, establish and prepare for meaningful careers.
Supporting education also supports the long-term strength of Lac La Biche County. When residents have greater access to post-secondary education locally, it creates more opportunities for people to learn, work and build their lives right here while helping develop the skilled workforce our region needs for the future.
Opportunities at home
Portage College President Dr. Stephen Price says the partnership provides local residents a direct pathway to further their education and begin careers – all while remaining close to home.
“The experience of a college or university-level education offers students a range of dynamic opportunities. For many, however, the expenses, stresses and uncertainty of leaving home or moving away from family and community can be daunting. We have implemented this agreement with Lac La Biche County to reduce those barriers,” he said. “This agreement will open up opportunities to community members who perhaps otherwise wouldn’t have thought it was possible.”
Criteria for award eligibility includes being a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, graduation from a high school within Lac La Biche County or proof of residency in Lac La Biche County for at least 24 months.
An allotment of $300,000 will be available for distribution in each of the three years. Any unused funds will be returned to Lac La Biche County and contributed into an Education Endowment Fund.
