Portage College is proud to announce a historic milestone in its evolution as a post-secondary institution with the launch of its first-ever bachelor’s degree program, the Bachelor of Education. The approval marks the first time in the College’s history that it has been authorized to grant a bachelor’s degree, representing a significant step forward in its growth and expanding opportunities for learners across Northeastern Alberta to pursue degree-level education closer to home. This exciting development expands access to degree-level education in the region while reinforcing Portage College’s commitment to meeting the growing demand for qualified educators.
Portage College gratefully acknowledges the Government of Alberta for its support of post-secondary education in Northeastern Alberta and extends sincere appreciation to local MLAs for their ongoing advocacy for learners and communities across the region.
The Bachelor of Education program provides a unique and comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for success in elementary school teaching environments. With a focus on both theory and practical application, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to support the diverse learning needs of young children.
President Dr. Steve Price stated, “This is a defining moment in Portage College’s history. The Portage College Bachelor of Education represents a different kind of promise to learners in Northeastern Alberta, one that recognizes the realities of work, family, and community. By designing a pathway that allows students to continue working while completing their degree, we are removing barriers that have historically limited access for some potential learners. This is about growing our own educators, people who are already rooted in this region, and supporting them to step into the classroom without having to step away from their lives.”
Brian Jean, Minister of Energy and Minerals, highlighted the broader impact of investing in education, “Strong education systems are the foundation of thriving communities and a resilient future. Programs like this help ensure Albertans, especially in rural and northern regions, have access to high-quality education close to home. Supporting learners as they pursue careers in teaching strengthens not only our classrooms, but also the long-term sustainability and prosperity of our province.”
Echoing the importance of community-driven education, Randy Benson, Chair of the Portage College Board of Governors, added, “This program represents a pivotal moment for Portage College and for the communities we serve. By bringing degree-level teacher education closer to home, we are creating meaningful opportunities for learners while strengthening the future of education across Northeastern Alberta. It reflects our commitment to responsive, community-focused growth and long-term regional success.”
Recognizing the realities of today’s learners, the program is delivered through a flexible multi-access offering with in-person practicums. This approach allows students to balance their studies with work and personal commitments, making it more accessible for those already working. The multi-access approach allows learners to complete some courses online while having in-person options for courses such as Fine Arts and Physical Education. In addition, practicum placements will provide valuable on-site experience in school settings. Graduates of the program will be well-prepared to pursue meaningful and rewarding careers that support the growth and development of children as K-12 educators or in a related field.
“This is an exciting milestone for Portage College as it reflects who we have always been as an institution. We are here to serve the people of our region, and that means recognizing that every learner’s journey is different,” said Donna Feledichuk, Vice President Academic and Research. “Whether someone is taking their first step through academic upgrading, developing new job skills, earning a certificate or diploma, or now pursuing a degree, our commitment has always remained the same: to provide meaningful opportunities that help people reach their educational and career goals without having to leave their communities. This milestone is not simply about adding degree programs. It is about meeting that commitment and strengthening our ability to serve the evolving needs of our learners, our communities, and our region by providing a full continuum of educational opportunities that help people achieve their goals at every stage of their learning journey.”
Applications are now being accepted for the inaugural cohort beginning in Fall 2026. More information is available at Bachelor of Education, Elementary – Portage College.
