About This Event
This introductory workshop series explores the historical and legal foundations of the relationship between Indigenous Peoples and Canada.
Participants will build a stronger understanding of how colonial laws and policies shaped that relationship and how their impacts continue today.
What You Will Learn
Participants will explore:
• The origins of Canada through colonial doctrines and legal frameworks
• Laws and policies that led to the dispossession and cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples
• Indigenous resistance and the ongoing assertion of inherent rights
• The role of treaties and Indigenous worldviews
• How the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) support reconciliation today
Workshop Breakdown
Segment One:Â The Doctrine of Discovery and the formation of Canada
Segment Two:Â Canadian laws aimed at the dispossession and cultural genocide of Indigenous Peoples
Segment Three:Â Indigenous resistance to settler colonial agendas and laws
Segment Four:Â Challenging colonial narratives and supporting reconciliation through TRC Calls to Action and UNDRIP
