Louis Riel

Louis Riel was a great Métis leader who helped his people form a government and become part of the newly created Dominion of Canada in 1870.

Every year on Louis Riel Day, we remember what Riel sacrificed and we renew the commitment to completing his work.

In addition to recognizing Louis Riel Day the Métis Nation of Alberta has declared the week surrounding November 16 as “Métis Week.”

Watch for Métis Week Activities coming up!

We acknowledge that Portage College’s service region is on the traditional lands of First Nation Peoples, the owners of Treaty 6, 8 and 10, which are also homelands to the Métis people. We honour the history and culture of all people who first lived and gathered in these lands.
