June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day and was declared a national holiday in 1996. The date was chosen to coincide with the summer solstice and the beginning of a season of berry-picking, fishing, pow-wows, and gatherings for Indigenous People in Canada. As Indigenous People, our celebration of all things Indigenous is never-ending. This June, and every month, we honour Indigenous children, their families, and their communities.
Look for ways in which you can participate and celebrate this day.
We acknowledge that Portage College’s service region is on the traditional lands of First Nation Peoples, the owners of Treaty 6, 8 and 10, which are also homelands to the Métis people. We honour the history and culture of all people who first lived and gathered in these lands.
