Portage College’s Annual Golf Tournament Raises $23,400 to Support Student Scholarships

Lac La Biche, Alberta – The annual golf tournament hosted by Pembina Pipeline Corporation once again brought together employees, contractors, and community supporters at the Meadowlands Golf Club in Sylvan Lake on September 14, 2023. Last year, the event raised an impressive $23,400 for the Portage College Scholarship Endowment, highlighting the critical importance of scholarships in supporting students’ educational journeys.

Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s commitment to education shines through their generous initiative of matching the contributions made by participating contractors, doubling the impact and ensuring that financial barriers do not hinder dedicated students from achieving their academic goals.

Scholarships play a vital role in enabling students to focus on their studies without the added stress of financial constraints. In the 2021-2022 academic year alone, over $500,000 was awarded to 270 students. Additionally, more than 645 scholarships, awards, and bursaries were distributed, with 18+ scholarships available per program. The college itself funded $195,000 in scholarships, awards, and bursaries in the same year.

Christine Fraser, Vice President, Oil Sands at Pembina Pipeline Corporation, shared her thoughts on the initiative, "Pembina is proud to support Portage College and its scholarship programs. We admire Portage College’s commitment to connecting community members with knowledge, skills, and opportunities and we are honored to support them in making this experience more accessible to all."

Scott Earle, Business Development Manager at OCL Group Inc., emphasized OCL Group's longstanding commitment to community support, "OCL has a long track record of supporting the communities we work and live in and Portage College is no different. The amount of work that the College does for the community in supporting individuals that want to continue their education does not go unnoticed. By supporting the College through the Pembina Golf Tournament, OCL can help this grow year after year."

We are also excited to announce another golf tournament this year, supporting our scholarships, happening in Sylvan again at the same golf course. This marks the 10th annual event, further solidifying our commitment to providing financial support to our students.

Rick, a representative of Portage College, stated, "Without corporate partners like Pembina and OCL, our college would not be able to support our students through our scholarship programs and job placement opportunities. Their contributions are invaluable in helping us continue our mission."
