Auction item winners enjoy Portage College welding course.

Two Lac La Biche families had a chance to enjoy some one-on-one welding training at Portage College earlier this month after winning a live auction bid at the Lac La Biche County Agriculture Appreciation Dinner on June 29. The families were among many bidders for several experiences the College donated during the dinner, which helped raise $4,575 for the family of Lac La Biche’s own Ezra Marfo. The two-year old is battling a rare form of leukemia and is in dire need of a stem cell transplant from a matching donor.

“We are so grateful for everyone’s support,” said Portage College President and CEO Nancy Broadbent. “This dinner had such a worthy cause that we wanted to do whatever we could to assist a courageous toddler and his family.”

Lucas Manca and his father Ryan really bonded during the four-night welding course, led by College instructor Bernard Bourque and offered through Continuing Education.

“I really enjoyed the hands-on experience and appreciated the instructor and his willingness to help us learn,” said Lucas.

The course was designed to spark the confidence of the students to undertake welding projects around the yard or at the farm.

Trevor Rolph brought his sons Corben and Brohden to the class and was impressed by their progress in a few short days. “The instructor was good with the kids,” he said. “Their skills have greatly improved.

The welding course was one of eight items the College donated for auction including three fork-to-field meals (bringing food to the field), and courses in ribbon-skirt making, solar energy, knife care and sharpening, and signature cake baking.

“These are just a few examples of the experiential learning opportunities that we can offer through our existing programs at Portage,” noted Broadbent. “If anyone has other suggestions for possible offerings, I encourage you to share them with us. We’re always open to new ideas.
