Portage College Hosts Annual Métis Scholar Awards Ceremony

Portage College is excited to announce the successful completion of the annual Métis Scholar Awards ceremony. Presented by the Métis Education Foundation and generously sponsored by Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Nation of Alberta, the event celebrated Métis culture and academic excellence.

The event showcased the achievements of 10 outstanding Métis students who were recognized for their hard work and dedication to their studies. Each recipient was honoured with a prestigious Métis sash, along with a monetary scholarship of $3,000.

The ceremony began with welcoming remarks from Portage College President and CEO, Nancy Broadbent, followed by a traditional Métis prayer led by Métis Elder, James Cardinal. Dan Cardinal, an alumnus and Board member of Rupertsland, delivered a greeting and heartfelt congratulations to the recipients.

"We are thrilled to have hosted this meaningful event that not only recognized academic achievement while also celebrating Métis culture and heritage," said Nancy Broadbent, President and CEO of Portage College. "It was an inspiring event that highlighted the importance of education and collaboration with our Métis partners."

A highlight of the event was the presentation of scholarships to the deserving recipients, accompanied by cultural performances by Métis fiddler, Deanna Dolstra and guitar player James Cardinal.

"The Otipemisiwak Métis Government proudly acknowledges the profound impact of teamwork and investment in education, highlighted by the collaboration among Portage College, the Métis Education Foundation, and the Rupertsland Institute," said Lisa Savill, Director of Métis Endowments & Post-Secondary Initiatives at the Rupertsland Institute and the Métis Nation of Alberta. "Since the establishment of the $1-million Métis Education Endowment Fund, Portage College's dedication to hosting unique Métis-specific award ceremonies reinforces our shared commitment to accessibility, inclusivity, and the overall academic success of our Métis citizens. By recognizing the diverse perspectives and contributions of Métis students, we remain steadfast in our mission to provide fair access to higher education; together we will bridge the gap in Métis education."

The event concluded with a group photo session and a round of applause for the recipients, emphasizing the significance of education in empowering Métis students to reach their full potential.
