Portage College Assists Keyano College in Expanding Primary Care Paramedic Education
February 27, 2025

Portage College and Keyano College have formed an exciting collaboration to expand access to Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) education in Northern Alberta. Together, the two institutions will support the growing demand for paramedics in local communities by increasing the capacity of Portage College's PCP program by 12 additional students. While enrolled in the Portage College program, these students will have the opportunity to complete their lab work at Keyano College.

Dr. Shun Li, dean of Health and Wellness at Portage College, says the collaboration with Keyano College will assist with the rising need for primary care paramedics across the province.

“Providing high-quality Primary Care Paramedicine education in Northern Alberta is Portage College's commitment to the communities we serve. I am pleased to work on extending our PCP Program to Fort McMurray,” says Li.

The Primary Care Paramedic Program equips students with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to perform medical emergencies. Students will be exposed to ambulance simulators, advanced medical equipment, and emergency protocols, enhancing their ability to respond effectively in high-pressure environments.

“Students enrolled in this cohort will have the identical curriculum as our Portage College programming. The only difference would be the onsite labs will be delivered at Keyano College,” says Li.

Alexis Teske, the interim dean of Health and Human Services, is pleased to link the Paramedic Programming.

“This collaboration will provide our students with enhanced resources, the right training, and expanded opportunities. Together, we are committed to delivering hands-on education and preparing our students to excel in their careers as primary care paramedics,” she said.

Those wishing to enroll in the Keyano College cohort for Primary Care Paramedic can apply directly to Portage College or contact Keyano College for detailed admission requirements. Potential students can also contact either institution to discuss future career paths.
