St. Paul, AB — On Monday, November 4, Portage College will host a Treaty 6 flag-raising ceremony at the St. Paul Campus, reaffirming the College’s dedication to reconciliation and honouring Indigenous histories, cultures, and partnerships. The College invites media representatives, students, faculty, community members, and local Indigenous leaders to participate in this meaningful event, which includes the lifting of the ceremonial pipe followed by a feast.
The Treaty 6 flag will be permanently displayed alongside the Métis, Alberta and Canadian flags, serving as a lasting symbol of Portage College’s commitment to respectful and inclusive collaboration with Indigenous communities. The flag will be a visible reminder of the College’s recognition of Treaty 6 lands and the shared journey toward truth and reconciliation.
“Raising the Treaty 6 flag is more than a gesture—it’s a powerful message about who we are and who we strive to become,” said Carrie Froehler, Vice President of People and Culture. “Our commitment is ongoing, and this event reflects our goal to build a community where Indigenous cultures are respected, celebrated, and woven into the fabric of our institution.”
Event Schedule:
Time: 10:00 AM
Flag-Raising Ceremony: Portage College St. Paul Campus
Pipe Ceremony and Feast: Following the ceremony, all attendees are invited to join the pipe ceremony and the feast, honouring Indigenous customs and celebrating community connections.

Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the significance of Treaty 6 and the role of education in fostering cultural awareness and respectful relationships.
The Treaty 6 flag, representative of one of Canada’s numbered treaties signed in 1876, symbolizes both the history of the land and the responsibilities shared by all Treaty People. This act of recognition is part of Portage College’s ongoing reconciliation efforts, which include educational initiatives, cultural events, and collaborations with Indigenous communities across the region.
