Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP)

Community Peace Officer Training

Portage College and Lac La Biche County are partners in the Peace Officer training program. 

The 12-week course will offer all of the training necessary for students to obtain Level 1 Community Peace Officer designations immediately.

Career Opportunities

A Level 1 Community Peace Officer's priorities are community safety, public education, bylaw and community standards enforcement, road safety and the protection of road infrastructure. Successful candidates will enforce community bylaws, arrest and release criminal code warrants, answer non-emergency calls like mischief or theft under $5,000 and conduct collision investigations.

This law enforcement training program is geared towards new and current Community Peace Officers (CPOs). Other opportunities for immediate future development include training for existing peace and police officers.

Training

This all-inclusive training program also provides:

  • Emergency vehicle driver training
  • Shotgun training for wildlife dispatch
  • Radar/Lidar training (Speed measuring training with laser)

Admission Requirements

  • 18 years of age
  • High school diploma
  • Driver's Abstract
  • Criminal Record Check
  • Child/Youth Information Check from AB Children's Services
  • Letters of reference
  • Cover letter explaining why you are interested in the training  

Applicants will be invited to an interview with the Law Enforcement Training Instructors as part of the application process.

2024 Training Courses

In partnership with Lac La Biche County, Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services, and Portage College two Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) courses will be offered in 2024:

  • March 4 - May 24, 2024
  • August 19 - November 7, 2024
